Functional Medicine For ADHD

Root-Cause Approach

A standard ADHD diagnosis tells you what is happening, not why. You meet a set number of criteria around attention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity, receive a label, and in most cases a prescription. That is not incorrect, but it treats ADHD as a single condition with a single lever, when in reality two people with the same symptom profile can have very different underlying drivers.

Functional medicine starts with the question conventional care often does not address: what is actually driving this pattern in this person’s body right now. For some patients, it may be iron deficiency limiting dopamine production. For others, blood sugar instability creates cycles of short-lived focus followed by prolonged crashes. In others, it may be chronic sleep disruption or gut imbalances that affect neurotransmitter regulation. None of these are identified in a standard ADHD evaluation, and none are directly addressed by stimulant medication alone, even if medication temporarily reduces symptoms.

This is the Uncover Root Causes stage of the FOCUS Formula. Before making recommendations around food, lifestyle, or supplementation, we look at physiology through history, symptoms, and when appropriate, lab testing focused on nutrient status, metabolic regulation, and gut function. The treatment plan is then built around the individual rather than the diagnosis. Some patients continue medication alongside this work. Others see enough change in underlying drivers that their medication needs shift over time. The goal is not to replace standard treatment, but to understand the full picture so nothing important is missed.

If you want to go deeper into any one area, the nutrition, lifestyle, and supplement sections in this resources library each explore parts of the root-cause framework in more detail.
